XADM: Automated Receipt Is Always from POSTMASTER@<local_domain.ext> (182010)

SYMPTOMS

When you send a message to a recipient on a remote Exchange Server computer, via an SMTP address, the automated delivery receipt will always be from POSTMASTER@<local_domain.ext>.

STATUS

The behavior has been changed in the latest service packs for Exchange Server version 5.0.

A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5. For information on obtaining the Service Pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):

After the above hotfix or Service Pack is applied, you can set the registry parameter to override the postmaster address.

  1. Specify the SMTP address identified as the postmaster by setting the following registry value: 
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS
      \ParametersSystem

   Name: System Administrator's SMTP Addr
   Type: REG_SZ
  2. Set the value to the SMTP address you want to use in place of Postmaster@localDomain.ext.
