SYMPTOMS

When you install an ES1788 or an ES688 sound card, the sound card may not be detected by Windows 98.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the sound card is not a Plug and Play device.

RESOLUTION

Use the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel to manually install the device. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add New Hardware, click Next, and then click Next.
  3. Click "No, I want to select the hardware from a list," and then click Next.
  4. In the Manufacturers box, click ESS Technology, Inc.
  5. In the Models box, click ESS AudioDrive, click Next, and then click Next.
  6. Restart Windows when you are prompted.
