This article was previously published under Q180505 SYMPTOMS When you use the Send Via E-mail command in Microsoft
Picture It!, you may receive the following error message Unable to send via email. Windows Messaging is not installed. Please install
this from your Windows Setup. Microsoft Exchange may
try to start instead of Microsoft Outlook Express. You may
receive the same error message in Microsoft Greetings Workshop after you create
a card, and then click Other Options, Send My Project, or Send Via E-mail. CAUSE This issue may occur if any of the following conditions are
true:
- Microsoft Windows Messaging is not installed.
- Microsoft Outlook Express is not your default e-mail
client.
- Outlook Express is not your default simple MAPI
client.
Note Outlook Express does not work with the Send Via E-mail command
in Microsoft Picture It! on a Microsoft Windows NT 3.51-based computer.
RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, use the following methods. Install Windows Messaging To install Windows Messaging, use the appropriate steps for your
version of Windows. Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
Microsoft Windows XP- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- In Windows XP, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
- In the Windows Components box, click to select the Message Queuing Services check box.
- Click OK to install the selected components.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft Windows 2000- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- In Windows 2000, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
- In the Windows Components box, click to select the Message Queuing Services check box.
- Click OK to install the selected components.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft Windows 98- Insert your Windows 98 installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM
drive while you press and hold down the SHIFT key.
- Double-click My Computer.
- Right-click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Open.
- Open the following folder:
Tools\Oldwin95\Message\US
- Double-click the Wms.exe file, and then follow the instructions on the screen to install
Windows Messaging.
Microsoft Windows 95 version 4.00.950- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- In Windows 95, click the Windows Setup tab.
- In the Components box, double-click Microsoft Exchange.
- Click to select the Microsoft Exchange
only check box.
- Click OK to install the selected components.

- In Windows 95, click the Windows Setup tab.
- In the Components box, double-click Windows Messaging.
- Click to select the Windows Messaging only
check box.
- Click OK to install the selected components.
- Restart Windows.
Configure Outlook Express to Be the Default Simple MAPI Client To configure Outlook Express to be the default simple MAPI
client:
- Start Outlook Express.
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the General tab, click to select both of the following check boxes:
- Make Outlook Express my default e-mail
program
- Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI
client
Note The following message is displayed when you click to select the
Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client check box: Enabling Outlook Express as your Simple MAPI provider will allow you to send documents from other programs by using the Send command on the File menu. You should do this if Outlook Express is the only mail program you use.
Other MAPI-enabled applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook, and Windows Messaging will be disabled if you make Outlook Express your Simple MAPI client, but they will work again when you cancel the selection of this option.
Are you sure you want to set Outlook Express as your Simple MAPI client?
If this is acceptable to you, click OK to dismiss the message.
- Click OK.
- Restart Windows.
MORE INFORMATION If you need more help with Outlook Express, you can contact
Microsoft Product Support Services at (425) 635-7123. What is MAPI? MAPI stands for Messaging Applications Programming Interface.
MAPI allows MAPI-aware applications and MAPI-aware e-mail clients to interact.
When you click the Send Via E-mail command, Picture It! saves the file, and then calls the
MAPISendMail function. If there is a MAPI-aware e-mail program on your
computer, that program responds to the MAPISendMail function.
Outlook Express is not a true MAPI e-mail client (it uses POP3), but it can
mimic a MAPI e-mail client in Windows if you configure it as described in this
article.
