OL98: Some Fonts Appear as Question Marks When You Use WordMail (180227)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word 97 as the e-mail editor in Microsoft Outlook 98, and you use the Internet Mail service, messages that are formatted with certain fonts may appear as a series of question marks (???).

RESOLUTION

This behavior only occurs when you are using WordMail. To switch to the Outlook e-mail editor rather than WordMail, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, then click the Mail Format tab.
  2. In the Send in this message format list, click to select Microsoft Outlook Rich Text instead of Microsoft Word, and click then OK.
When you compose new messages in Outlook, you can use the same font and the message will display correctly.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Start Outlook with the Internet Mail service in your accounts.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Mail Format tab, click to select Microsoft Word in the Send in this message format list, and then click OK.
  4. Compose a new message, and then address it to yourself.
  5. Type some text in the body of the message, and then format it using a non-standard font such as Arial Narrow Special G1, and then click Send.
  6. On the Tools menu, click Send And Receive, and then click the Internet Mail account to send the message.
  7. Wait a few minutes, and then repeat step 6 to receive the message.
  8. Double-click the message to open and read it. A series of question marks is displayed instead of the text you typed.
