The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft NetMeeting 2.1 for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft NetMeeting 2.1 for Windows 95

This article was previously published under Q177801

SYMPTOMS

When you view a directory listing or the SpeedDial properties for a NetMeeting user, extended characters and double-byte character set (DBCS) characters may be replaced with question mark or underscore characters.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the versions of Windows and NetMeeting you are using are not capable of displaying extended characters and DBCS characters.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, enable support for multiple languages in Windows, and then install the appropriate localized (foreign language) version of NetMeeting. For information about enabling support for multiple languages in Windows, see the appropriate article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

141306 How to Enable Support for Multiple Languages in Windows 95

177561 How to Add and Enable Additional Languages in Windows NT

For information about downloading and installing a localized version of NetMeeting, see the following Microsoft Web site:

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

An extended character is any ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) character between 128 and 255. Extended characters (also known as "extended ASCII") can add up to 128 additional characters to the standard ASCII character set, such as accented letters, graphics characters, and special symbols. DBCS characters are typically used to represent foreign language characters, such as Japanese or Chinese.
