WD98: Compatibility Preferences Offer Options for WordPerfect 6 (177568)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q177568

SYMPTOMS

When you look at the compatibility choices under Recommended Options For (on the Tools menu, click Preferences, and then click the Compatibility tab), the following file formats are listed:

WordPerfect 6.x for Windows
WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS

The availability of these choices is confusing because you cannot open either of these file types in Word 98 Macintosh Edition.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Although you cannot open WordPerfect 6.x or WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS files in Word 98 Macintosh Edition, if you select either of these options on the Compatibility tab, Word will display the document formatting as if you were using WordPerfect 6.x or WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS. You may want to use this functionality if you are used to using WordPerfect 6.x or WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS.

In general, the options on the Compatibility tab help you to customize Word to work with converted documents. Changing the options on the Compatibility tab affects only the display of a document while you're working with it in Word. It does not permanently change any formatting in the document. If you later convert the document back to its original file format, the formatting appears as it did before you converted it to Word.

In Word 98 Macintosh Edition, for more information about what file formats can be opened by Word, click the Office Assistant, type "file format," click Search, and then click "File format converters supplied with Microsoft Word."

NOTE: If the Assistant is hidden, click the Office Assistant button on the Standard toolbar. If Word Help is not installed on your computer, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
