XL98: Crash Saving Workbook That Uses BeforeSave Event (177391)

SYMPTOMS

When you save a file in Microsoft Excel, you may receive one of the following error messages:
The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 2 occurred.
You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.

-or-

The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 1 occurred.
You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.

-or-

Sorry, a system error occurred.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when using the BeforeSave event if either of the following conditions is true:

  • The IsAddin property of the workbook object returned by ThisWorkbook is set to True. -or-

  • The workbook is hidden.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
