SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Graph, when you try to change the font for a chart title or axis title, you receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, the message contains the following information about the location of the invalid page fault:
Graph8 caused an invalid page fault in module GRAPH8.EXE at 0137:3011bc5

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To change the attributes of a chart title, follow these steps:
  1. Double-click the graph to edit it.
  2. Click the graph title to select it.
  3. Right-click the title, and click Format Chart Title on the shortcut menu.
  4. On the Font tab, make your changes to the title font properties, and click OK.
To change the attributes of an axis title, follow these steps:
  1. Double-click the graph to edit it.
  2. Click an axis title to select it.
  3. Right-click the title, and click Format Axis Title on the shortcut menu.
  4. Make your changes to the axis font properties, and click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Start PowerPoint 97, and open a new blank presentation.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Chart.
  3. On the Chart menu, click Chart Options, and then click the Title tab.
  4. Type My Title in the Chart Title text box, and then click OK.
  5. Click the text "My title" until you can select the title text, and then select the text.
  6. On the Format menu, click Font.

    Result: You receive the error message listed in the "Symptoms" section.
