XL97: Input Range Error Using Anova Analysis Tool (173554)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q173554

SYMPTOMS

When you use "Anova: Two-Factor Without Replication" in the Data Analysis tools, you may receive the following error message:
Anova: Two-Factor Without Replication - Input range contains non-numeric data

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the input range contains either empty cells or text.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, enter a value of zero (0) into the empty cells in the input range. This has no significant effect on the variation of the data, because Excel is substituting zeroes for empty values when the calculations are performed.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior differs from earlier versions of Excel. Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0 allow empty cells in the input range. The Anova analysis tool in Excel 97 does not work unless you remove the empty cells in the input range or replace them with values.
