WD: How to Use DollarText to Convert Numbers to Cardinal Text (173287)

SUMMARY

This article describes how to use the DollarText field switch in a Microsoft Word field code to spell out a dollar value alphabetically. By converting numeric data to cardinal text, this field switch is useful for creating a bank-style check.

For example, if you use the DollarText field switch, Word converts the number 5,245.25 to Five Thousand Two hundred Forty Five AND 25/100.

NOTE: There is a limit of six-digits that can be represented by the DollarText switch--Word can spell out the dollar amount up to $999,999.99.

The following are examples of how to use the DollarText field to create bank-style checks:

If the amount is known:
{= 5,245.25 \*DOLLARTEXT \*upper}
NOTE: To insert a field in a document, you can use either the Insert Field command or press ALT+F9 (Command+F9 on the Macintosh) to insert the special field brackets.
If the amount is a variable, you can use either a FILLIN or ASK field, or use a reference to an existing bookmark to enter the amount with the correct format:
FILLIN:
{Fillin "Fill in the Total Amount" \*DOLLARTEXT \*upper}
-or-

ASK:
{Ask Total "What is the total?"}
{REF TOTAL \*Dollartext \*upper}
EXISTING BOOKMARK:
{REF TOTAL \*Dollartext \*upper}, Where TOTAL is a bookmark representing a total field in an invoice, and so on.
