OL97: How to Turn On Logging After Installing the IMEP (170321)

Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the
registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the
Windows folder.
SYMPTOMS
The option for logging an Internet Mail session defaults to off after
installing the Internet Mail Enhancement Patch for Microsoft Outlook 97
(IMEP). To turn the option on, you must modify the Windows registry. This
article describes how to make that modification.
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved.
Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
RESOLUTION
When you turn the Internet Mail logging option on, a new subfolder is
created under the Windows folder. This sub folder has the same name as your
Internet Mail Service. The sub folder contains 3 files for logging
various activities:

Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you
should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat)
before you edit the registry.
To save your IMEP sessions in a log file you must edit the registry as
follows:
- On Outlook's File menu, click "Exit and Log Off."
- Click the Start button, and point to Run. In the Open box, type
regedit, and click OK to run the
Windows Registry Editor.
- Move to and click to select the following key:
Hkey_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Internet Mail and News/Mail
- Right-click "Log Outlook (0/1)" in the list of registry keys and click
Delete.
- On the Edit menu, point to New and click DWORD Value.
- Type the name Log Outlook (0/1) and
press Enter.
- Right-click the new "Log Outlook (0/1)" key and click Modify.
- In the Value data window, type 1, click
OK, and close the Registry Editor.
NOTE: To change the location of the log files, right-click the "Log File
(Outlook)" key and change the Value data to the folder into which the log
file should be placed.
