This article was previously published under Q165641

MORE INFORMATION

In addition to removing the Underline button from the toolbar, Microsoft added two buttons--Small Capitals and Font Color--to make it easier for you to change the color of text and to apply the small capitals text effect.

DESIGN TIP: When you type text on a typewriter, you often underline titles or text that you want to emphasize. A professional typesetter replaces underlined text with italic text. Unless you want a typewriter- like effect, you should use italic text effects instead of underline formatting.

SYMPTOMS

You cannot apply underline formatting to a selection of text using a toolbar button in Microsoft Publisher 97 or Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95. This functionality is different from previous versions of Publisher in which you could click an Underline button on the Top toolbar to apply underline formatting.

CAUSE

This functionality was changed based on requests from Publisher users who indicated that they used the CTRL+U shortcut to apply underline formatting instead of the Underline button.

RESOLUTION

To underline text in Publisher, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Use the Shortcut Keys

  • Select your text and then press CTRL+U.

    -or-
  • Press CTRL+U to turn on underline formatting, type your text, and then press CTRL+U to turn off underline formatting.

  2. On the Format menu, click Character.
  3. Under Effects, click to select the underline effect you want to use.
