XFOR: Lost Messages When Running Inbox Validation (161681)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System 1.0

This article was previously published under Q161681

SYMPTOMS

When you run INETCFG in Validate Mode on an Inbox Folder, it opens the Index file and, in the process, blocks out any SMTP or POP3 connections. During the rebuild process, if an SMTP or POP3 process adds or deletes a file, that state change may not be accurately reflected. This will depend on where your FindFirstFile( ) search was at the time.

However, when INETCFG is run in Rebuild Mode, the SMTP or POP connections are not blocked.

CAUSE

In Rebuild Mode, a new (temporary) Index file is opened and all the *.EML entries are added to it from the folder. The temporary file is simply renamed to be a real Index file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in MCIS version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
