XFOR: POP3 Starts Without a Mailroot Directory, SMTP Fails to Start (161675)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System 1.0

This article was previously published under Q161675

SYMPTOMS

POP3 will start with no Mailroot, Queue, Mailbox, or Badmail directories (that is, the directories do not exist). SMTP will fail to start with no Mailroot directory, and the following error message appears:
The system cannot find the path specified.
However, SMTP does not produce an error message if the Queue, Mailbox, or Badmail directories do not exist.

Both POP3 and SMTP should behave consistently and in a similar manner, reporting that the directories do not exist.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in MCIS version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
