TMGR: Task Properties Best Fit Scheduling Fields Have all "?" (161648)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q161648 SYMPTOMS
On the General tab of the Task Properties dialog box, there are question
marks for each of the Best Fit Scheduling fields: Start Date, Finish Date,
Percent Complete, Unassigned Work, and Overloaded Work.
CAUSE
When changes are made in the Task Properties dialog box that might affect
the scheduling of the task, the Best Fit Scheduling fields are set to
question marks until the dialog box is closed to force a recalculation.
Because recalculation does not occur until the dialog box closes, the
question marks make it clear that the Best Fit Scheduling fields do not
contain current information.
After recalculating, the Best Fit Scheduling fields remain question marks
only if the Total Work is zero. In this case, question marks are used to
indicate that there is no work to schedule, although other factors, such as
Start constraints and predecessors, are still used to determine the start
of the task.
RESOLUTION
Close the Task Properties dialog box and then reopen it to force it to
recalculate.
If there are still question marks for the Best Fit Scheduling entries, then
the task Total Work is zero. In that case, the only way to get rid of the
question marks for the Best Fit Scheduling fields is to set the Total Work
to a nonzero value and then to close and reopen the Task Properties dialog
box so it recalculates.
If you really intend for a task to have zero Total Work, then there is no
way to get rid of the question marks in the Best Fit Scheduling fields.
However, each of the Best Fit Scheduling fields can be inserted into a task
sheet view, such as Task Organizer, where it will be blank or contain
something other than a question mark.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
To display the Task Properties dialog box for a task, select the task and
on the Edit menu click Task Properties (or using the right mouse button,
click the task, and then click Task properties on the shortcut menu.)
Any changes made to a task on the Task Properties General, Scheduling, or
Tracking tab, other than editing its name or associated goals, will cause
the Best Fit Scheduling fields to display question marks. Closing and
reopening the Task Properties dialog box removes the question marks unless
the task has zero Total Work.
