TMGR: Default Work Unit Converts Pasted Number in Timesheet (161618)

This article was previously published under Q161618 SYMPTOMS
If you copy and paste a number without a work unit (h, d, w, or m) into a
cell in a timescaled grid in a timesheet view, such as the Actual Work
view, the number is incorrectly interpreted as including the "Default work
unit for new tasks" specified in the Options Work tab. The hourly
conversion settings in the Options Work tab are then used to convert the
pasted number and work unit to the corresponding value and current
timescaled grid work unit (h, d, or w).
For example, suppose the "Default work unit for new tasks" is days, the
Actual Work view timescaled grid is currently formatted to display work in
hours, and the Options Work tab has "One work day is 8 hours." If you paste
the number 10 into a cell in the timescaled grid, it will display 80h. This
happens because the 10 is first treated as 10d (using "Default work unit
for new tasks") and then converted to 80h (using "One work day is 8
hours").
NOTE: Manually entering 10 without a work unit results in 10h, because it
correctly uses the current timescaled grid work unit instead of the
"Default work unit for new tasks."
WORKAROUND
To ensure the proper interpretation of pasted work values, include the unit
symbol h, d, w, or m with the numbers in the source document that the
values are being copied from.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the
beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post
new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes
available.
MORE INFORMATION
The work units h, d, w, and m stand for hours, days, weeks, and months,
respectively.
Timesheet views, such as the Actual Work view, allow data to be entered in
cells in a timescaled grid in the Actual Work, Actual Overtime Work, and
Actual Standard Rate Work timesheet columns. To change which timesheet
columns are displayed, on the Format menu, click Add/Remove Timesheet
Columns.
Timesheet views can have an Upper and Lower timescale, or just an Upper
timescale. Timescale Units (Days, Weeks, and so on) can be specified for
the Upper and Lower timescales. To format the timescale, on the Format menu
click Timescale, or use the timescale slider control near the upper-right
corner of the window. The timescale slider choices of Daily, Weekly,
Biweekly, Semimonthly, Monthly, or Quarterly are converted into appropriate
settings in the Format Timescale dialog box.
The same work unit is used in all cells in a timesheet timescaled grid, and
that work unit is determined by the Lower timescale Unit if both timescales
are displayed, or the Upper timescale Unit if only one timescale is
displayed. The table below shows the relationship between the timescale
Unit and the timescaled grid work unit.
Timescale Unit Timescaled Grid Work Unit
-------------- -------------------------
Days h
Weeks d
Semi-Monthly d
Months d
Quarters w
Years w
The "Default work unit for new tasks" setting in the Options Work tab has
no effect on the timescaled grid work units.
