SYMPTOMS

A task with a Status of Completed and no Actual Work has dates in the Actual Start and Actual Finish fields, but if the task has any assignments, the assignment Actual Start and Actual Finish fields contain n/a.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The following sections discuss what happens to a task that has no Actual Work when its Status field is set to Completed.

If No Person Is Assigned

If a task has no person assigned to it, then setting the Status field to Completed automatically sets the Actual and Total Work to zero. The task Start and Finish are both set to the date and time of the file start. The Actual Start and Actual Finish are set to the day of the file start, but always use times of 12:00 AM and 11:59 PM, respectively.

If People Are Assigned

If a task has people assigned to it with nonzero Total Work but no Actual Work, then setting the Status field to Completed displays the following warning message:
You are marking a task complete that has remaining work.
If this work was performed, you can enter it as actual work now.
If this work was not performed, you can discard it.
The message has an Enter Actual Work button, a Discard Work button, and a Cancel button. Clicking the Discard Work button sets the Actual and Total Work of the task and each assignment to zero. For each assignment, the assignment Start and Finish is set to the person's Schedule From date, and the assignment Actual Start and Actual Finish are n/a. The task Start and Finish roll up from the assignments. The task Actual Start and Actual Finish have the same dates as the task Start and Finish, but always use times of 12:00 AM and 11:59 PM, respectively.

NOTE: To view the Schedule From date for a person, click the People tab, and on the View banner, select the Profile Information view. Select the person in the Left Pane to see the person's information in the Right Pane. If the Schedule From field is not listed in the Right Pane, on the Format menu, click Add/Remove Fields and add the Schedule From field.
