The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q161322

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Microsoft Excel 5.0 to Microsoft Excel 97, any built-in toolbar you customize or custom toolbar you create in Microsoft Excel 5.0 does not appear in Microsoft Excel 97.

CAUSE

Microsoft Excel 97 does not convert Microsoft Excel 5.0 toolbars that are stored in the Excel5.xlb file.

RESOLUTION

To use toolbars that stored in the Excel5.xlb file, do the following:
  1. Start Microsoft Excel 97.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. Locate the Excel5.xlb file in the Windows folder and select it.
  4. Click Open.

Microsoft Excel does not open a workbook but does load the toolbars into random access memory (RAM).
  5. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click the name of any toolbar you created in Microsoft Excel 5.0.
NOTE: If the Excel5.xlb file contains one of the built-in toolbars, the toolbar name that appears on the Toolbars menu is followed by an asterisk. For example, the Standard toolbar appears as Standard*.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 97.
