This article outlines how to import your Mail Message File (MMF) contents from a previous version of the Windows NT Mail client into your Windows Messaging Personal Folders in Windows NT version 4.0.

After you upgrade from a previous version of Windows NT to Windows NT version 4.0, you have both Windows NT Mail and Windows Messaging capabilities. If you decide to switch to Windows Messaging as your only mail client, you must import your MMF contents from the Windows NT Mail client into your Windows Messaging Personal Folders to retain messages previously saved in the Windows NT Mail client.

To import your MMF contents to Windows Messaging Personal Folders, perform the following steps:
  1. Determine the current location of your MMF file.
    1. Start the Windows NT Mail client.
    2. On the Mail menu, click Options.
    3. Click Server.

      If Postoffice is the currently selected option, then your MMF file is located on the Mail postoffice.

      If Local is the currently selected option, then your MMF file is located on the local computer.
  2. If your MMF is stored locally:
    1. Close the Windows NT Mail client.
    2. Make a backup copy of your existing MMF file, located in the %SystemRoot% directory as <username>.mmf by default.
    3. Start Windows Messaging.

      NOTE: If you have not yet installed Windows Messaging, open Help and query on "Windows Messaging" in the Help Topics Index for more information on installing and configuring Windows Messaging.
    4. Choose Import from the File menu.
    5. Select your MMF file from the %SystemRoot% directory, click Open, and follow the on-screen directions for importing your MMF file contents into your Windows Messaging Personal Folders.
  3. If your MMF is stored on the Mail postoffice:
    1. In the Server settings window of the Windows NT Mail client (see step 1 above for opening this window), select Local for the storage location, type a local path and filename for your MMF file (that is, C:\Winnt35\Username.mmf), click OK to close the Server window and then click OK again to close the Options window.
    2. Proceed with step 2 above to import your MMF file contents into your Windows Messaging Personal Folders. In step 2e above, select the MMF file that you moved in step 3a above from the Postoffice to local storage.
