Text Import Wizard May Not Run With Virus Search Add-In (158283)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a text file in Microsoft Excel the Text Import Wizard may not run and your data will be opened, unparsed, into column A of your worksheet.

CAUSE

You may experience the above behavior if both of the following are true:
  • You are manually opening a text file. -and-

  • You have a version, other than version 1.2, of the Virus Search Add-In, Xlscan.xla, installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue so that the Text Import Wizard runs when you open a text file, remove your current version of the Virus Search add-in, obtain version 1.2 from the Microsoft World Wide Web site, and install this version on your computer:

  1. Uninstall the Virus Search add-in you currently have installed.

    1. Click Add-Ins on the Tools menu.
    2. In the Add-Ins dialog box, clear the check box for "Microsoft Excel Virus Search" and click OK.
    3. Exit Microsoft Excel.
    4. Delete the file, Xlscan.xla, from the \Msoffice\Excel\Library folder.
  2. Obtain version 1.2 of the Virus Search add-in, Xlscan.xla.

  3. Follow the directions that come with the latest version of the add-in to install this version on your computer.

STATUS

This problem was corrected in version 1.2 of the Microsoft Excel Virus Search add-in, Xlscan.xla.

MORE INFORMATION

To determine if version 1.2 of the Virus Search add-in is installed on your computer, in Microsoft Excel click Open on the File menu. Select any file that contains a macro and then click Open. If the title bar of the next dialog box does not contain "Version 1.2", you have a version other than 1.2.

NOTE: The above steps for checking your version of the Virus Search add-in assume you have the add-in listed as installed in the Add-Ins dialog box in Microsoft Excel.

When you have version 1.2 of the Virus Search add-in installed on your computer and you open a text file in Microsoft Excel, the following dialog box will appear:

This file is a text file that does not contain a virus. To open this
file using the Text Import Wizard, click OK, and in the Open dialog box,
click OK.

Because this Open dialog box does not provide virus protection, you
can only open text files safely.

and you can click OK or Cancel.

If you click OK, the Open dialog box will appear. Click your text file and then click the Open button to start the Text Import Wizard. If you click Cancel, the Text Import Wizard will not run and your file will not be opened.
