XL97: "Features May Be Lost" Message Appears When Saving File with a Chart (157539)

SYMPTOMS

When you save a workbook that contains a chart in the "Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook" format, the following message may appear:

This workbook contains features that are not supported by the file format you selected. To avoid the possible loss of formatting or information, be sure to save a copy in the most recent Microsoft Excel Workbook format.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when either of the following conditions is true:

The workbook contains one of the following new chart types:
cylinder
cone
pyramid
-or-
The chart contains formatting that causes the chart to appear differently when you open it in Microsoft Excel 5.0 or 7.0.

For example, dates on the x-axis may be scaled in most chart types in Microsoft Excel 97; however, Microsoft Excel 5.0 and 7.0 scale the category x-axis values only in xy (scatter) charts.

Saving workbooks in the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook format saves charts. Note that the chart formats that are new in Microsoft Excel 97 are converted to different formats when you save the workbook in the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook format. The following table lists the formats to which the new chart formats are converted.

   Bubble                 Xy (scatter)

When you save a file that contains the new bubble chart, Excel 97 does not indicate that information may be lost. This chart is interpreted as an xy (scatter) chart.

NOTE: Excel 97 allows for rotated text in charts while earlier versions of Excel do not. However, Excel 97 does not indicate that this formatting is lost when you save the file in an earlier version format.
