OFF97: MS Excel File Does Not Appear in Open Dialog Box (157489)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
- Microsoft Office Binder 97
This article was previously published under Q157489 SYMPTOMS
When you save a Microsoft Excel section of a Binder as a separate file, and
then click Open on the File menu, the file you saved may not appear in the
Open dialog box in Microsoft Excel.
CAUSE
The Microsoft Excel file may not appear in the Open dialog box in Microsoft
Excel when all of the following conditions are true:
- You save the Binder file that contains the Microsoft Excel section with
the default .obd extension prior to saving the Microsoft Excel section.
-and-
- When you save the Microsoft Excel section of the Binder as a separate
file, you do not change the default name given to the section in the
Save As dialog box.
-and-
- You add the Microsoft Excel worksheet section to the Binder by clicking
Add on the Section menu instead of "Add from File."
When you save a previously unsaved Microsoft Excel worksheet section of a
Binder file, the Microsoft Excel file, by default, includes the name of the
Binder file, including the .obd file extension. For example, if you have a
Binder file called Binder1.obd, and you save a Microsoft Excel worksheet
section of the Binder as a separate file, the default name for this file is
"Worksheet in Binder1.obd".
RESOLUTION
To prevent the Microsoft Excel worksheet section from being saved with the
.obd extension, do the following:
- Delete the default name given to the section in the "File name" box of
the Save As dialog box.
- Type a new name without any extension.
- In the "Save as type" list, click Microsoft Excel Workbook to append the
correct file extension to the file.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem
and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it
becomes available.
