XL97: Cannot Drag Drawing Objects onto Windows Desktop (156984)

In Microsoft Excel 97, if you select a drawing object or AutoShape and
attempt to use a drag-and-drop operation to place the object on the Windows
desktop, the cursor becomes a circle with a diagonal line through it, and
the drawing object does not appear on the desktop.
CAUSE
This functionality is not available in Microsoft Excel 97.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
In Microsoft Excel version 7.0, you can drag a drawing object from a
Microsoft Excel worksheet and place it on the Windows desktop. When you
place a drawing object on the Windows desktop in this way, a "scrap" file
is created.
