This article was previously published under Q154606 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to dial using a saved NetMeeting connection file, any of
the following symptoms may occur:
- NetMeeting may not connect correctly.
- NetMeeting may connect to a different user than you expect.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the saved connection refers to an Internet
Protocol (IP) address that is no longer valid for the user you are trying
to call.
RESOLUTION
Connect to the directory server again to find the current IP address of the
person you want to call.
MORE INFORMATIONWhy NetMeeting Might Connect You to a User Different from the Expected One
When you use your Internet browser to click the name of a user listed on a
directory server, you have the option to call or to save a connection to
anyone logged on to the server. If you choose to save the connection so you
can dial it later, NetMeeting creates a file with the information needed to
connect to that user.
Many Internet service providers use dynamic host configuration protocol
(DHCP). DHCP can assign a different address to a user each time that user
connects to the Internet. When you attempt to contact that user at a later
time, the IP address saved in the .cnf file may actually be assigned to a
different user. If that different user is running NetMeeting, you may
unexpectedly connect to that user.
Setting Up an Address That People Can Always Reach from a Saved Connection
Some Internet service providers can provide you with a static IP address.
A static IP address allows you to always use the same IP address when you
are connected to the network. If someone creates a .uls file to connect to
you once you have a static IP address, he or she will be able to connect
to you any time you are connected to the network.
