PUB97: Invalid Page Fault Opening FoxPro .dbf File (152707)

SYMPTOMS

If you try to use a database (.dbf) file created in Microsoft FoxPro as the data source for a mail merge in Publisher 97, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, please contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you will see the following additional information:
MSPUB caused an invalide page fault in module MSXB3032.DLL at 0137:04321455
When you close this message, Publisher will close.

CAUSE

This problem will occur if the folder that contains the .dbf file contains another file with the same name that does not have an extension.

For example, if you try to open a file called Address.dbf, and there is another file in the same folder called Address, the problem will occur.

RESOLUTION

Rename the duplicate file so that it has an extension. In the example, change the name of the file from Address to Address.xxx.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
