SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Query, two copies the program may be opened instead of one. This behavior may occur when you click the Get External Data command on the Data menu or when you use the Get External Data option in the PivotTable Wizard.

CAUSE

Two copies of Microsoft Query may be started (one being Microsoft Query version 1.0 and the other being Microsoft Query version 2.0), if the following conditions are met:

  • You start Microsoft query by clicking Get External Data on the Data menu or by using the Get External Data option in the Pivot Table Wizard.

    -and-
  • The Path statement in the Autoexec.bat file contains a reference to the folder where Microsoft Query 1.0 (Msquery.exe) resides.

WORKAROUND

To avoid opening two copies of Microsoft Query as mentioned above, remove the reference to the directory containing Msquery.exe from the Autoexec.bat file.

NOTE: The file name for Microsoft Query 2.0 is Msqry32.exe.

MORE INFORMATION

MSQuery 1.0 is shipped with Microsoft Excel version 5.0 and is located in the Windows\Msapps folder (usually the C:\Windows\Msapps).
