SUMMARY

If you want to run one of the programs listed above from the hard drive rather than from the compact disc to increase performance or to make it easier to use, use the steps listed below.

MORE INFORMATION

IMPORTANT: The information below is given for information purposes ONLY. The programs are designed to run from the CD-ROM drive; therefore, the configurations outlined below are NOT recommended or supported by Microsoft.

Follow the instructions for the appropriate program in the sections that follow, which are broken down into Creative Writer on CD-ROM, Fine Artist on CD-ROM, and Creative Writer/Fine Artist on one CD-ROM.

Creative Writer CD

Versions 1.1 and 1.1b
Approximate disk space needed: 23.1 MB
  1. Copy the following items from the compact disc onto the Macintosh hard drive icon:

    Setup
    MSKids
    Setup Files

  2. Rename the hard drive to MS Creative Writer.
  3. Run Setup from the hard drive.
  4. Drag the Setup icon and the Setup Files folder to the Trash.
  5. Run Creative Writer from the MSKids folder on the hard drive.
You should now be able to run Creative Writer from the hard drive without inserting the compact disc.

Notes

This configuration requires that you store all user information on a drive that is independent of the drive on which the product is loaded (for example, a floppy disk). If you save files to the same drive that the program is installed on, you likely won't be able to open those files later.

As long as you log in as a user that resides on a floppy disk (or a disk that is on a different drive than the program is installed on), you should be able to see the sample documents.

The hard drive must be the same name as listed in the steps above at the time you run the program.

The following are symptoms that you have not configured the program correctly:
  • The program asks you to insert the compact disc when you try to access stickers, sounds, and existing documents.
  • You click the Portfolio, hear the sound of a zipper, but you only return to the workspace.
  • When you are in the Library or Gallery, there are no disk drives showing in the File Cabinet or Portfolio Rack tool.

Fine Artist CD

Versions 1.1 and 1.1b
Approximate disk space needed: 23.3 MB
  1. Copy the following items from the compact disc onto the Macintosh hard drive icon.

    Setup
    MsKids
    Setup Files

  2. Rename the hard drive to MS Fine Artist.
  3. Run Setup from the hard drive.
  4. Drag the Setup icon and the Setup Files folder to the Trash.
  5. Run Fine Artist from the MSKids folder on the hard drive.
You should now be able to run Fine Artist from the hard drive without inserting the compact disc.

See the "Notes" section under the instructions for Creative Writer.
