This article was previously published under Q146886 SYMPTOMS
When you insert a table in Word, the font inside the table may change to
the internal default font of Times New Roman 10 point (Windows) or Times
10 point (Macintosh).
CAUSE
A drawing object, such as a text box or rectangle, is attached to the
same paragraph mark where the table was inserted.
WORKAROUND
Remove the direct formatting after inserting table. Position your insertion
point in the table. From the Table menu, choose Select Table. Use one of
the following methods to change back to the desired style or font:
Method 1
Press CTRL+SPACEBAR (Windows) or COMMAND+SPACEBAR (Macintosh) to remove the
character formatting.
Method 2
Reapply the style by doing the following:
- On the Format menu, click Style.
- Select the style you are using then click Apply.
Method 3
Reapply the correct font by doing the following:
- On the Format menu, click Font.
- Select the correct font then click OK.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Word
listed at the beginning of this article. This problem no longer occurs in
Word for Windows 95, version 7.0 and Word 98 Macintosh Edition
MORE INFORMATION
The internal default formatting of Times New Roman 10 pt or Times 10 pt
is applied directly to the table cells. This formatting is applied no
matter what style is being used.
NOTE: You can use Reveal Formatting to view this format. Press SHIFT+F1
or click the Help button once, then click on one of the table cells. The
font formatting next to Direct is what is directly applied to the table.
