SUMMARY

This article can help you determine if Microsoft Project workgroup features will work in a given configuration. It also tells you which programs you need for the various individuals on your project to use workgroup features.

If you want to know whether Microsoft Project will work in a given scenario with a specific e-mail program, see "Table 1--Supported configurations of Microsoft Project and email programs" in the "Determining Your Workgroup Configuration" section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

DETERMINING YOUR WORKGROUP CONFIGURATION

Step 1: Determine What Type of Functionality You Need

Determine the role you have in the project. With Workgroup messaging, you can either have manager functionality or resource functionality:

  • A manager sends workgroup messages (from the Workgroup menu)
  • A resource receives and responds to workgroup messages

Step 2: Determine If Your Configuration Is Supported (Manager) or Determine Which Setup Program You Need to Run (Resource)

Follow the appropriate procedure for the role you have in the project (that is, manager or resource).
To Determine If Your Configuration Is Supported (Manager)
   ---------------------------------------------------------
The following table compares the version of Microsoft Project with the
various e-mail packages that Microsoft Project supports. Look up your
version of Microsoft Project and the electronic mail package you are
using to see if the configuration you want to use is supported.

Table 1--Supported configurations of Microsoft Project and e-mail
   programs

Exchange cc:Mail Notes MS Mail NT MS Mail(16)
   ------------------------------------------------------------------------
   Proj4.1a | NT or Win95 Win95 NT or Win95 Yes No**
   Proj4.1 | NT or Win95 Win95 Win95 Yes No**
   Proj4.0 | Won't Work * No * Yes

*In order to use this configuration, you must obtain the Workgroup
Message Handler for Lotus cc:Mail/NT Mail. For information about how to
obtain the message handler, please see the following article in the
   Microsoft Knowledge Base:

**NOTE: If you are running Microsoft Project 4.1 for Windows 95 and
Microsoft Mail, you will need to update to the Exchange client that
ships with Windows 95. Microsoft Exchange can communicate with the MS
Mail post office that you are already using.

To Determine the Type of Setup Program You Should Run (Resource)
   ----------------------------------------------------------------
The type of Setup program you should run depends on the following
   factors:

    - The version of Microsoft Project your manager is using
    - The operating system you are using
    - The type of e-mail client you are using

Based on the version of Microsoft Project your manager is using, use the
appropriate table below to look up the operating system and the e-mail
program you are using. The intersection of the two items shows which
Workgroup Messaging Setup program you should run. For information about
the location of the Setup program, see the information following the
   appropriate table.

Table 2--Manager is using Microsoft Project version 4.1

Exchange cc:Mail Notes MS Mail NT MS Mail(16)
