This article was previously published under Q141754 SUMMARY Using the Open dialog box, you can access
many functions for managing your files. This article lists the available
functions and their limitations as they apply to Money. MORE INFORMATIONDescription of Open Dialog Box Functions To access the Open dialog box, click Open on the File menu. Using
your right mouse button, click a Money data file. A menu appears that lists the
following options:
Select This opens the highlighted file.
Open This tries to run a second copy of Money. You cannot
run two instances of Money at the same time. You
receive the error:
Microsoft Money is already running
Send to You have a choice of sending a copy of the file to
other drives. Other options may be installed on your
computer.
If you try to send the currently open Money file you
receive the error:
Cannot copy <file name>. There has been a sharing
violation. The source or destination file may be
in use.
Cut You cannot cut and paste into another folder or
drive.
Copy The first step in making a copy of the file in the
same folder. To complete the operation, see "Paste"
listed below. You cannot copy to another folder or
drive.
If you try to copy and paste the current Money file,
you receive the message:
Cannot copy <file name>. There has been a sharing
violation. The source or destination file may be
in use.
Create Makes a shortcut to the file. Drag the shortcut to
Shortcut the desktop. Double-clicking the shortcut is a quick
way to get to specific Money files directly from the
desktop.
Delete Sends the file to the Recycle Bin to be deleted. You
cannot delete the currently open file. If you try to
delete the currently open file you receive the
message:
Cannot delete <filename.mny>: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use.
Rename After clicking Rename, type a new file name.
NOTE: Do not add the .mny extension to your file
name, unless it was already visible. For example,
if the file name reads Msmoney, do not rename it
Finance.mny. Doing so will result in a file actually
named Finance.mny.mny
If you try to rename the currently open file, you
receive the message:
Cannot rename <filename.mny>: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use.
Properties Displays the Properties sheet containing information
about your file. Do not change the attribute to
either Read Only or Hidden. Money will not open a
Read Only file, and you may not be able to see a
hidden file in order to open it.
More Options These options are available by using your right mouse button to
click on a blank section of the open window, not on a file or folder.
View Your choices are to show the files and folders as
Large Icons, Small Icons, List or Details. Clicking
Details displays the file's name, size, type,
and modification date and time.
Arrange Your choices are by Name, by Type, by Size, by Date.
Icons If you have chosen the Large Icons or Small Icons
view, the AutoArrange option is available.
Line Up This is available if the View is Large Icons or Small
Icons Icons.
Paste This is available if either Cut or Copy has been
chosen for a file or folder. You can only paste into
the same folder from which you copied. If you change
to a different drive and/or folder, Paste will not be
available.
After using Copy, Paste makes a copy of that file
with the default name of "Copy of <file name>", where
<file name> is the name of the file selected with the
Copy option. After making a copy, you can then rename
it to any name you want.
Paste This creates a shortcut to a file that has been
Shortcut selected with the Copy option.
Undo Rename This reverses the last Rename action. You can go back
to the Open dialog box later and undo the last
Rename, it does not have to be done immediately after
the Rename.
New You have the choices of Folder, Shortcut or various
documents (depending on the software installed on
your system). You will not see a Money document
listed and you cannot make a new Money file from this
menu. New allows you to make a new folder to hold
data files. For example, you could make a new folder
to hold archived files or exported .qif files.
NOTE: To make a new Money file, click the New button
in the Open dialog box or click New on the File menu.
Properties This displays the properties of the current folder.
If you are connected to a network, the sharing
properties of this folder are displayed and are
available for editing.
Dragging Files You may drag files to any folder visible in the Open dialog box.
Because higher level folders are not visible, you cannot drag to parent folders
or other drives. If you are not running Money in full-screen mode,
you can directly drag files and folders from the Open dialog
window to the desktop, to other open windows (for example, a folder in
explorer), to programs, or to the Recycle Bin. Dragging a file or
folder with the right mouse-button held down provides a menu of advanced
options allowing you to specify if you wish to copy, move, or create a shortcut
of that file.
