This article was previously published under Q140174 SYMPTOMS
When you try to insert a symbol, Word does not insert the correct character. For example, when you try to insert a round bullet, Word inserts a clock.
CAUSE
The Symbol font may be damaged, corrupted, or missing. When this font is not available, Word substitutes the Wingdings font. The character looks correct when you select it from the grid, but if the selected or default font is not available, Word substitutes the corresponding character from the Wingdings font.
Word makes this substitution based on the character's ANSI code. For example, both the clock (Wingdings font) and the round bullet (Symbol font) are represented by the same ANSI code, ALT+0183.
RESOLUTION
Locate and delete the existing Symbole.fon font file on your system. By default, the symbol font file is located in your Windows\Font folder. Then use one of the following methods to replace your Windows symbol font file:
Method 1: Copy From a Different System
Copy the symbol font file (Symbole.fon) from a computer running the same version of Microsoft Windows to your system. By default, the Windows font files are located in the Windows\Font folder.
Method 2: Extract the Font From Your Windows Disks
The symbol font file (Symbole.fon) is located on your Windows setup disks. For additional information about how to extract a file from your Windows setup disks, click the article number below
