The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0

This article was previously published under Q140154

SYMPTOMS

If you open a publication from a network drive, and the network server fails or the network drive is disconnected, you may receive the following error message when you try to save the publication:
Publisher cannot create a temporary working file.
This error message may be repeated and be followed by an error message similar to the following:
The disk is full trying to write "X:\Filename.pub". Please save this file to a different disk and/or drive.
If the network connection is lost and re-established before you try to save the publication, you will only get the second error message.

After you receive these error messages, you cannot successfully save the publication. Even if you can reconnect to the network drive, you will receive an error message similar to the following each time you try to use the Save or Save As command:
The disk is full trying to write "X:\Filename.pub". Please save this file to a different disk and/or drive.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

RESOLUTION

Once you encounter these error messages, the only way to salvage your changes is to copy the pages you have changed to a new publication. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Switch to a page that you have changed.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. Start a new session of Publisher.
  5. In the new session of Publisher, click Paste on the Edit menu.
  6. Copy each changed page in the first publication to the new publication.
  7. Save the new publication.
  8. Exit the old publication without making changes. You can open it again and use your new publication to restore the changes.
