SYMPTOMS

When you send a password-protected document as an attachment from Word using the Send command on the File menu, the recipient is not prompted for a password when opening the file from the mail message.

CAUSE

When Word sends a document, it does not retain all the document properties.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Word versions listed above. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Word.

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1 (Word 6.x and 7.x)

To retain password protection, attach password-protected documents from within your mail program instead of sending them from Word.

Method 2 (Word 6.x for Windows Only)
