PRJ41: "Cannot Access/Open File" Error Message Opening File (136642)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project for Windows 95 4.1
This article was previously published under Q136642 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you open a file using the Open dialog box, you
may receive the following error message:
Cannot access file.
When you open a file by clicking the filename on the list at the lower part
of the File menu, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot open file.
CAUSE
These problems occur when there is not enough memory available in Microsoft
Windows 95. These error messages are confusing because they do not indicate
why you cannot open the file or give you any information about how to
correct this problem. Additionally, a different message is displayed
depending on how you open the file.
If the memory available on your computer is too low, the Open dialog box
does not appear when you click Open on the File menu.
RESOLUTION
If you are receiving one these error messages when you open a file in
Microsoft Project, there may not be enough memory available in Windows 95.
To free up available memory in Windows, you may need to close down programs
that are running, or you may need to configure Windows to use virtual
memory.
For additional information about using virtual memory in Windows 95, please
see the following article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
