PUB: Cropped Text in Rotated Pictures Shows Up in Printout (132684)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0

This article was previously published under Q132684

SYMPTOMS

If you crop a picture that contains text and then rotate that picture and print it to a PostScript printer, all the text may print anyway.

This will happen if the following conditions apply:
  • The picture is a vector-based (or "draw-type") graphic or an OLE object. Some vector-based file formats are Computer Graphics Metafile (.cgm), AutoCad (.dxg), MicroGrafx Draw (.drw), and Lotus (.pic).
  • You are printing to a PostScript printer.
  • You are running Windows 95.
This problem does not occur with bitmap-based (or "paint-type") graphics. Some bitmap file formats are: Windows Bitmap (.bmp), PC Paintbrush (.pcx), and Tagged Image File Format (.tif).

The problem does not occur if you are printing to a non-PostScript printer, and it does not occur if you are running Windows NT 3.51 or later.

WORKAROUND

You can work around this problem by using "electronic whiteout."
  1. Draw a shape using one of Publisher's drawing tools.
  2. Fill the shape with the same color as your publication's background.
  3. Change the border thickness of the shape to None.
  4. Position the shape on top of the text in the picture that you want to crop.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
