Works 3.0: Changing Font Changes Column Size (121687)

SYMPTOMS

When you manually change the column widths in a Works spreadsheet or database, and then select the entire spreadsheet or list view in the database, then and change the font size, the reported column width changes from the manually selected width.

MORE INFORMATION

The reported column width is the number of average-width characters of the master font and master font size that will fit in the column. It is NOT the number of actual characters that will fit in a specific cell, which may have a different font and characters of varying widths.

Using the Select All command and then changing the font size changes the master font size for the spreadsheet. Although changing the master font and size does not visibly change the column width, it does change the units on which the column width is based. Therefore, it changes the number reported in the Column Width dialog box.

NOTES:

  • If cells in two or more columns are chosen, the default column width of 10 is reported.

  • Columns left at the default width (10) will remain at width 10 even when the master font and size are changed. Only those column widths manually changed will change with the master font.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Manually select cells in the columns using the mouse or the arrow keys.
  2. From the Format menu, click Column Width and enter a new number to change the column width.
  3. From the Edit menu, click Select All.
  4. From the Format menu, click Font And Style, and then change the size in the Size box.
  5. Select a cell in a column with a manually changed width, and click Column Width from the Format menu. A new number is reported.
