SYMPTOMS

In Word 6.x or 7.0, when you insert or update a table of contents or table of figures in a document that you originally created in Word 2.0 for Windows, the following error message may occur:
There is insufficient memory. Close extra windows and save your work.

CAUSE

The Word 2.0 document may not have been converted correctly by Word 6.x or Word 7.0. As a result, when you update or insert the table of contents (TOC field), the above "insufficient memory" error message occurs.

NOTE: This may also occur if portions of your document were created in Word 2.x for Windows and copied and pasted into a Word 6.x document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

One or more of the following methods may be used to fix the above problem:

Method 1:

In Word 6.0, save the document in Word for Windows 2.0 format.

  1. In Word 6.0, from the File menu, choose Save As.
  2. Change Save File As Type to Word for Windows 2.0 and click OK.
  3. From the File menu, choose Close. When prompted to save changes say Yes and choose the Word 2.0 format.
  4. Reopen the document.
Method 2:

In Word 2.0, reopen the file and save in the Word 2.0 format.
  1. In Word 2.0, open the file.
  2. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  3. Make sure Save File As Type is Word Document and click OK.
  4. From the File Menu, choose Close. Exit Word 2.0 if needed.
  5. Launch Word 6.0.
  6. Reopen the document.
NOTE: If the problem still occurs, reopen the document in Word 2.0, save in the RTF format, and reopen in Word 6.0.
