PRJ: Change in Link from Automatic to Manual Is Not Saved (113938)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows 4.0
  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95 4.1

This article was previously published under Q113938

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you change the Update option for a link in a project from Automatic to Manual, and then close the project file, this change is not saved.

CAUSE

When you change the Update option for a link from Automatic to Manual, this change alone does not cause Microsoft Project to prompt you with a dialog box asking if you want to save the project when you close the project file. This change does not "dirty" the project file and it is not registered as a change made to the project.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this behavior when you change the Update option for a link in Microsoft Project, save the project file after you make the change.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use the Links dialog box to change the Update option for a link in your project. In Microsoft Project, when you open a project that contains an automatic link to information in the same project, another project, or a document in another application, a dialog box with the following message appears:
'FILENAME.MPP' contains linked information. Re-establish links?
If you choose No in this dialog box, the Update option for the link is still Automatic in the Links dialog box; however, the link behaves as a manual link until you manually re-establish the link. You can manually re-establish the link by doing either of the following:

  • Double-click the linked information to open the source document that contains the information. -or-

  • Use the Links dialog box as follows:

    1. Select the linked information.
    2. From the Edit menu, choose Links.
    3. From the Links list, select the link you want to re-establish, and choose the Open Source button.
Each of the Microsoft Office Applications also use the Links dialog box to make changes to the links contained in the document.

Microsoft Excel

In Microsoft Excel, when you change the Update option for a link in a workbook from Automatic to Manual, you are not prompted to save this change when you close the workbook. When you open a workbook that contains linked information, a dialog box with the following message appears:
This document contains links. Re-establish links?

Note that you receive this message whether the link contained in the workbook is Automatic or Manual.

Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft PowerPoint

In Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft PowerPoint, when you change the Update option for a link in a document, report, or slide from Automatic to Manual, you are prompted to save this change when you close the respective file. When you open a document, report, or slide that contains linked information, you will not be prompted about whether or not to re-establish the link. Instead, if the link is automatic, it is automatically re-established. If the link is manual, it remains manual and is not automatically updated.
