PRJ: Undo Command Unavailable with Large Number of Tasks/Resources (112998)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you have a large number of tasks and resources in your project, the Undo command is unavailable when you choose the Edit menu after you make a change to your project. You do not receive a dialog box warning you that when you make a change, the change cannot be undone.

CAUSE

Microsoft Project uses an undo buffer, a file in memory that stores an action you perform so that you can choose to undo that action. The Undo command is unavailable when you perform an action that uses more memory than the undo buffer can hold. If you have a large number of tasks and resources in your project file, when you perform an action such as dragging a task bar to change the duration or start date, the undo buffer may be exceeded, causing the Undo command to be unavailable.

NOTE: This behavior depends on how much extended memory you have available on your computer.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

Note that the following steps were reproduced on a computer with 10 megabytes (MB) of extended memory.

  1. In a new project, enter 9,9999 tasks, T1 through T9999.
  2. From the View menu, choose Resource Sheet.
  3. Enter 9,999 resources, R1 through R9999.
  4. From the View menu, choose Gantt Chart.
  5. Drag the right end of the task bar for T1 to extend the duration of T1.
  6. Choose the Edit menu.
Note that Undo Drag is not available from the Edit menu.
