Access Violation in SNMP When Processing Short OIDs (112872)

When the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) service processes very
short Object Identifiers (OIDs), the service terminates with an access
violation.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the algorithm used to decode an SNMP OID of length less than 2 results in an invalid pointer reference.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT
Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem has been corrected in the latest
U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version
