Win Netadmin Ignores High Dword for Computing Bytes Sent/Recvd (112808)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft LAN Manager 2.2

This article was previously published under Q112808

SYMPTOMS

The LAN Manager Netadmin utility for Windows reports the wrong number of bytes sent to or received from a LAN Manager server.

CAUSE

When the Windows Netadmin utility calculates number of bytes sent to or received by the server, it disregards the high 32-bit double word (dword) of the NetBIOS Control Block (NCB) counter (this is a large counter consisting of two dword's, totaling 64 bits). Windows Netadmin only reports the low dword. Hence, when the counter reaches a multiple of 4 GB, Windows Netadmin reports it as if it were re-initialized to zero.

NOTE: The LAN Manager OS/2 Netadmin utility computes this figure correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem. We are researching this and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
