Can't Use UNC Destination Paths with MOVE (112744)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.1
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.1
- Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server 3.1
This article was previously published under Q112744 SYMPTOMS
The MOVE command accepts a universal naming convention (UNC) path for the
source path, but not for the target path. After using the following command
move \\server_1\sharename1\filename \\server_2\sharename2
the error message, "The system cannot find the path specified," appears.
This error does not occur if you use a network drive letter in place of the UNC path. For example, the following two commands enable you to use MOVE successfully:
net use x: \\server_2\sharename2
move \\server_1\sharename1\filename x:
Other commands (such as XCOPY and COPY) accept UNC names for both the
source and destination path.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT
Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post
new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes
available.
