Works Err Msg: One of the Library Files Needed to Run... (111933)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 3.0
  • Microsoft Windows 3.0

This article was previously published under Q111933

SYMPTOMS

If either a Works .DLL or a Windows .DLL file necessary to run Works 3.0 is damaged, the following error message is displayed when you attempt to start Works 3.0:
One of the library files needed to run this application is damaged. Please reinstall this application.

SOLUTION

Use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Do the following:

  1. Run Works Setup and click Remove All (including shared applications).
  2. In the Windows\System folder, rename the following files:

    COMPOBJ.DLL
    CTL3DV2.DLL
    OLE2.DLL
    OLE2.REG
    OLE2CONV.DLL
    OLE2DISP.DLL
    OLE2NLS.DLL
    OLE2PROX.DLL
    PUBOLE.DLL
    STORAGE.DLL
    WKSOLE.DLL
    WKSOLEUI.DLL

  3. Restart Works Setup and choose Complete Install.

Method 2

Reinstalling Works solves the problem only if it is a Works .DLL file that is damaged. If it is a damaged Windows .DLL file, reinstalling Works will NOT correct this problem. You will need to locate the damaged Windows .DLL file, delete it or rename it, then manually expand that .DLL file from the Windows 3.1 disk.

Because there are so many .DLL files that Works will use, and some .DLL files will call other .DLL files, the best approach to correct this problem is reinstalling Windows in a new directory. This loads only the default .DLL files, and does not load third-party .DLL files that may be causing problems.

NOTE: Even though it is a Windows .DLL file that is invalid, the error message still instructs you to reinstall the Works application, which will not correct the problem.
