SUMMARY

Works 3.0 automatically prompts you to convert a Works 2.0 label document to Works 3.0 format when the Print command is chosen and Preview is selected. If you automatically convert a Works 2.0 label document, Works does not use one of the formatted sizes from the Envelope/Label dialog box, even if there is one that matches. Works 3.0 creates a custom label size. If the label was originally a laser label, there should be no problem regardless of the size Works 3.0 selects. If the label was originally a dot-matrix label with a user-defined size and 0 margins, Works 3.0 may indicate the wrong number of labels down the page.

After converting the document, you need to make sure all settings are correct and save the changes when closing the file or exiting Works for Windows.

Steps to Reproduce Situation

  1. In Works 2.0, create a label document.
  2. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup.
  3. Select User Defined Size from the Paper Size box. You must be connected to a printer that supports User Defined Settings (usually a dot-matrix printer).
  4. Type 400 in both the Width and the Length boxes.
  5. Close the Printer Setup box.
  6. From the File menu, choose Page Setup & Margins.
  7. Set all the margins to 0" and set the page width and length to 4". Choose OK.
  8. From the File menu, choose Print Labels.
  9. Provide the following settings in the Print Labels dialog box:

    Vertical 1"
    Horizontal 3.5"
    Number of labels across the page 1

  10. Choose the Preview button. Notice four labels down the page.
  11. Save and close the document.
  12. Open this label document in Works 3.0.
  13. From the File menu, choose Print.
  14. Choose the Preview button and choose the correct database for the information.
  15. Choose Yes to convert the document into a Works 3.0 format. Notice that only three labels are printed down the page instead of 4.
  16. Cancel the Preview screen.
  17. From the Tools menu, choose Envelopes And Labels.
  18. Select the Mailing Labels tab.
  19. Choose the Custom Label button.
  20. Under Number Of Labels, change Down Page from three to four. This should correct any problems.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works for Windows version 3.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

To Automatically Convert Works 2.0 Labels into a Works 3.0 Document

  1. Open a Works 2.0 label document in Works 3.0.
  2. From the File menu, choose Print.
  3. In the What To Print box, select Mailing Labels.
  4. Choose the Preview button.
  5. Works will display the following message:

    Convert old Works mailing labels to new Works for Windows 3.0 format?

  6. If you choose No, you will exit Print Preview without converting the file. If you choose Yes to continue the Print Preview process, select the database with which you want to merge.
  7. Choose OK to Merge all records or choose Cancel to exit the Print Preview process.
NOTE: These changes need to be saved when you exit Works.
