This article was previously published under Q110633 SYMPTOMS
When you use bullets and numbering in Word 6.0 for Windows and Word 95,
Word may warn you that proceeding with the action will remove the current
bullets or number formatting. In some situations, this message may be
generated when no bullets or numbers are visible in the paragraph.
CAUSE
When you apply bullets or numbering, if Word detects existing bullets or
numbers, generates the message "Word is removing bullets and numbers." This
functionality is intended to alert you that completing the current action
will result in the replacement of the current bullets or numbers.
The act of applying and removing bullets marks the paragraphs internally as
having a numbering property (in some cases, "no numbering"). When you start
to apply another form of numbering, Word determines that these paragraphs
have a numbering attribute (even if it is "no numbering") and displays the
generic warning message.
Therefore, it is possible for the message noted above to be generated when
no bullets or numbers are present in a selected paragraph.
RESOLUTION
If you choose OK to complete the action, the formatting is completed
correctly. The warning message is an extra step to go through in applying
the numbering or bullets.
