SQL Data Source Connection Limit (108827)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel for Windows 5.0
- Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh 5.0
- Microsoft Query
This article was previously published under Q108827 SUMMARY
The number of connections to SQL servers is limited under Microsoft Query.
Attempting to make more than 14 connections to SQL servers will result in
the following error message:
ConnectionOpen (sopen()).
Unable to connect to data source
Connecting to 14 SQL servers and then making a connection to a dBASE
source and adding a table will result in the following error message:
Can't access table <path\filename>
Choosing OK to this error message and again attempting to connect to a
dBASE data source will result in another error message:
Data source not found and no default driver specified
MORE INFORMATION
The above error messages result from a limited number of Microsoft Query
connection handles. There are no settings in either the application or the
ODBC drivers to correct this. Connections to SQL server take one connection
handle each. Attempting to make a fifteenth (15th) connection will result
in an error.
