Overview -------- This download utility provides a central location for the RioDiag application and other support files required to run the utility. RioDiag.exe is an executable file designed to assist in memory management in regards to the Rio Digital Audio Playback Device and SmartMedia 3.3v form factor flash memory upgrade modules. The Rio uses SmartMedia 3.3v compliant flash memory in a proprietary environment. This utility will allow the user to format SmartMedia 3.3v flash memory modules used with the Rio back to SmartMedia 3.3v compliancy (for use in devices such as digital cameras). In addition, the RioDiag utility will allow the user to diagnose the internal flash memory in the Rio as well as the external SmartMedia flash memory module. RioDiag Installation Instructions --------------------------------- The Rio Portable Music Player and Rio Portable Music Player Software Version 1.01 or newer must be installed before attempting to run the RioDiag utility. After the RioDiag.exe utility has been downloaded, simply put the RioDiag utility into the directory of your choice. Double click the zip file to unzip the utility (it is advisable to keep the RioDiag.exe utility in it’s own directory, such as ‘RioDiagnostic’). Double click RioDiag.exe to run the RioDiag utility. Read the RioDiag Utility Software Instructions for further assistance. RioDiag Utility Software Instructions ------------------------------------- Format utility ? Upon selecting the format option you will be prompted: “Do you want to format the smartmedia?” ? A window will appear showing the status of the format. Once completed, the “SmartMedia Format Complete!” message will appear. Click ok. ? The SmartMedia 3.3v form factor flash memory upgrade module is now SmartMedia 3.3v compliant. Note: If the Rio is not connected, you will receive the following error “Not connected Rio!!”. Please verify that the unit is connected and click on format. If you click on the memory option, then choose external you will see a “Checksum fail” message. The “Checksum fail” message is displayed because the SmartMedia 3.3v flash memory module is no longer formatted to operate in the Rio. To make the SmartMedia 3.3v flash memory module operate in the Rio you will need to use the Rio Manager software to “initialize” the SmartMedia 3.3v flash memory module. For assistance with the Rio Manager please view the Readme file associated with the Rio Manager software. Memory utility ? Once you have selected the memory button a new window will appear. The diagnostic tool can scan for and mark bad blocks within the Rio internal flash memory and the external SmartMedia 3.3v flash memory module. By default the internal flash memory is selected. (If a Rio Digital Audio Playback device is not connected to the PC, any option on the memory screen other than ‘Cancel’ will cause a “Device not connected” error message). Unformatted or SmartMedia 3.3v form factor formatted memory flash modules will result in a “Checksum fail” message (this is not an error). The “Diagnose” option can only be used on memory blocks (internal or external) that have audio tracks stored in them. ? You can select one track or several. Select the first track and then hold down the shift key and click on the last track in your list to scan all the used memory. ? If you are experiencing problems within one track, select that track and run "diagnose". During the diagnose phase, a gray rectangle will scroll across the memory blocks (much like Scandisk). If any bad blocks are found, you will be prompted to mark the blocks bad (This will delete the track from the flash memory!!!!). Normally up to 8 out of 40 blocks can be marked bad before performance is effected. ? The flash memory specifications allow for a certain percentage (%) of bad blocks before the memory is deemed "defective". As a result of this, most often the flash memory will only loose a few Kbytes. Any Flash Memory device using the same media will have this issue. Some flash modules may have a larger number of bad blocks than others. ? If you want to “Diagnose” the external SmartMedia 3.3v flash memory upgrade module choose the “external” option. The “Diagnose” option works the same way on external SmartMedia 3.3v flash memory modules as it does on the internal flash memory.
