This Readme file contains the following information: A) Notes and known problems B) Notes about Windows 95 C) Notes about Windows 3.1x D) Notes about using Video Crunch It 2000 and Mirage Video E) Notes about using Video Crunch It 2000 and Stealth Video F) Notes about Media Studio 2.5 from Ulead G) Notes about MPEG Converter from Ulead A) Notes and known problems - The current release of the Video Crunch It 2000 drivers does not support an overlay using DirectDraw. This will become available in one of the next releases. - Video Crunch It 2000 is an active PCI bus master device. Certain motherboards do not support all PCI slots to be master slots. If placed into such a slot the Video Crunch It 2000 will not function at all or even the system will not boot. If you happen to have this problem, try switching PCI slots. Also check your motherboards system BIOS for a function to enable / disable PCI bus mastering. - If the Recording and Playback of video sequences produces 'dropped frames', is not continous, or the display quality is badly (Compression losses) check the settings for the compression / data rate for recording. The easiest way to adjust the compression ratios is using the slider in the Code Volume setup dialog. Is the playback not continously or if 'dropped frames' occur, reduce the value. Increase this value if the playback quality is bad (compression losses). If you use an older, not so powerful systems or older IDE hard drivers you probably will not achieve data rates higher than 2 MBytes per second. - The Video Capture Software displays just single frames of the input signals and during playback the playback-window remains black when you did not install video overlay or you hardware is not capable of displaying an overlay. If the Video Crunch It 2000 is used with a SPEA graphics board without the SPEA MovieBus, with a DIAMOND / SPEA graphics board without a S3 LPB connector, or a graphipcs board without proper DirectDraw functionality no video overlay can be displayed. In this case it is recomended to use a video monitor to monitor captureing. If the Video Crunch It 2000 is used together with a graphics board with SPEA MovieBus or S3 LPB connector, please check the cabling between the two boards and the drivers setting. If using a DirectDraw enabled graphics board please check the drivers settings. Also see the manual for details. - When recording a video sequence, the capture software always reports, that xx frames have been dropped during the recording. This happens if you chose settings for the audio and video data stream (video format, compression, frames per second and sound quality) in a way, that the system is unable to follow it. Reduce the data quantity, so that the system can handle it. If running under Windows 3.1x it is very important to install a 32 bit driver for the hard disk. - It seems that the video playback is not smooth when the video data stream contains dropped frames, the video is not played back smoothly. Please take note of the steps described above. If the data flow defined is very close to the maximum data rate, it may occur that Video for Windows doesn't receive the necessary data in time. Reduce the data flow as far as possible until the effect disappears. It can also help to add a read cache for the drive with the video sequences. Install the 32 bit driver for your hard disk system under Windows - if not already the case. You can find additional information about this in your Windows manual or in the operating guide of your hard disk (IDE) or your hard disk controller (SCSI, ESDI). - Please take note of that all applications and system enhancements running in background take system resources and add extra load to the system. Especially during recording and playing back of video sequences this can cause problems. Therefore it is strongly recomended that all applications and system enhancements are closed or disabled while recording and playing back video. B) Notes about Windows 95 The following Windows 95 system specific problems may occure: - If Your video application produces an "General Protection Fault" or "Division Error" at startup - even if the Crunch It 2000 driver is deinstalled - this may be caused by Your version of DCIMAN.DLL. Please copy the version of DCIMAN.DLL which is provided at the SuperCD under the subdirectory "Install\Digvideo\Vcr2000\Dci" into Your Windows95 SYSTEM and SYBCKUP directory. - During playback of AVI files it may happen that the media player application may not react or may not react immediately to mouse clicks. By clicking an other application, the Windows 95 start bar or the Windows 95 background prior to clicking any button on the media player application the media player will react immediately. - During playback of AVI files it may happen that the playback will be interupted by Windows 95 accessing the system from time to time. This problem is caused by Windows 95's virtual memory management. Installing Windows 95 Service Pack 1 can improve this problem. Deactivating Windows 95's virtual memory management will resolve this problem. To deactivate the virtual memory management open the control panel and select from "System" "Performance" and "Virtual Memory...". Choose "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings." and select "Disable virtual memory". If You don't want to deactivate the virtual memory You can set "Minimum" equal to "Maximum" (about 3 times the size of your RAM). - During playback of AVI files it may happen that an AVI file can be opend but can not be played back. If this happens Windows 95 did not provide the media player application or the Video Crunch It 2000 drivers with enough memory. Closing media player and all other unneeded applications usually frees enought memory to playback the AVI file. The problem can be resolved in general by reducing the amount of memory Windows 95 occupies for file caching. To do so the SYSTEM.INI file from the Windows 95 directory needs to be edited. To do so open the SYSTEM.INI file and search for the [vcache] section. If the SYSTEM.INI does not have a [vcache] section go to the end of the file and add a new line containing "[vcache]". Right after the [vcache] line add the following line: "MaxFileCache=4096". C) Notes about Windows 3.1x - The standard file system of Windows 3.1x is not very performant and tends to slow down file I/O process on fast hard drives. Because of this caturing and playing back video with Windows 3.1x may show poor performance. To improve performance it is necessary to install 32 bit drivers for your Enhanced-IDE harddrive or your SCSI hostadapter. Drivers for SCSI adapters are available from their manufacturers. Drivers for Enhanced-IDE drives are supplied either by the hard drives manufacturer or the manufacturer of an Enhanced-IDE controller card. If Smartdrive or an other disk-caching program is used to speed up hard drive access the write back caching should be disabled for video capturing. D) Notes about using Video Crunch It 2000 and Mirage Video - Using the SPEA Moviebus to connect Mirage Video (TV) with MPEG Module and Video Crunch It 2000: Attention: Using the Video Crunch It 2000 together with a Mirage Video with MPEG Module or Mirage Video TV with MPEG Module requires the MPEG Module to be revision 10A03 or newer. Older MPEG Modules may not work correctly with the Crunch It. MPEG Modules revision 10A03 or newer can be identified by a Sticker on the backside of the module showing the actual revision. If you own an older MPEG Module and want to use it with Crunch It please contact our service department for replacement. - Using the S3 LPB to connect Mirage Video (TV) with Video Crunch It 2000: Attention: Befor installation of the Video Crunch It 2000 and establishing the LPB cable connection between the two boards the newest drivers (Rel. 0896, SuperCD III/96 or newer) for Mirage Video (TV) for Windows 3.1x or Windows 95 have to be installed. - Overlay is possible for all colour depths only up to a resolution of 1024x768 pixel. In case of high colour your maximum refresh rate is 75 Hz. Do not open a DOS box while your overlay is on for this may cause problems. E) Notes about using Video Crunch It 2000 and Stealth Video - Playback of non MJPG AVI files with DVIDEO.DLL (Direct-X) Please activate within the file SYSTEM.INI the (commented) entry [Drivers32] vids.draw=dvideo.dll or add it, if necessary. For playback of MJPG coded AVI files (as made by Video Crunch It 2000) please comment it out again. F) Notes about Media Studio 2.5 from Ulead - In some cases you may experience that the editing software media studio from Ulead may stop encoding an AVI file with the error message "Not enough disk space available" athough this is not true. This problem has been fixed by Ulead and an update to version 2.5A has become available through the Ulead and DIAMOND / SPEA support media. Also this update (2 Exe-files) is provided at the SuperCD III\96 under "Install\Digvideo\Vcr2000\Msve25a" . G) Notes about MPEG Converter from Ulead - With certain settings the MPEG Converter from Ulead produces MPEG files that can not be played back on hardware MPEG players based on the S3 MPEG playback chip athough these streams are MPEG-1 compliant. This problem has been fixed by Ulead and an update has become available through the Ulead and DIAMOND / SPEA support media.
