======================================================================= Stealth 3D 2000 Series README.TXT ======================================================================= Release Notes ------------- This is v4.02.012 of the Stealth 3D 2000 Series Windows 95 driver. Windows95 Installation Notes ---------------------------- A. If Windows 95 is already installed -------------------------------------- 1. When you first install the video card in the system and power on, Windows 95 will inform you that it has discovered a new PCI VGA compatible display adapter, and will prompt you to install drivers for it. You will want to select "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer". 2. Windows 95 will prompt your for the disk to install the drivers from. Make sure that you have the Stealth 3D 2000 series CD-ROM inserted into your CD-ROM drive, and enter the path X:\WIN95 then click "OK" (where X is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). 3. Select Device: Select "Stealth 3D 2000 Series (4.02.012)". 4. Click "OK" then "Close" and follow the Windows 95 prompts. Note: This driver configures the display adapter's refresh rate AUTOMATICALLY according to the capabilities of the monitor to which it is attached and which has been properly configured using MONITOR TYPE. B. Installing Windows 95 after the installing the Stealth 3D ------------------------------------------------------------- 1. If you install Windows 95 after you have installed the Stealth 3D 2000, Windows 95 will use a generic S3 driver for the Stealth 3D 2000. When you reboot Windows 95 after installation, you will receive a message notifying you that your display adapter is not configured properly. Click Cancel. 2. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab. 3. Upon looking at the Device Manager, you'll notice that in addition to the S3 driver, there is a PCI VGA-Compatible Display Adapter listed in the Other Devices section. Select the PCI VGA-Compatible Display Adapter and click the remove button at the bottom of Device Manager. 4. A message box will appear notifying you that the Display Adapter has a ROM, cautioning you not to remove a device that Windows 95 may need in order to boot properly. As this is NOT THE CASE for this driver, click Test. Your screen may blank temporarily. Then the device will be removed. Click OK to close the device manager. 5. Next, double-click your desktop to open the Display Control Panel. Click the Settings tab. You will receive a message that the display hardware is not working properly. Click Cancel. 6. Click the Change Display Type button. In the Adapter Type section, click the Change button. Click the Have Disk button. In the space labeled "Copy manu- facturers files from" type X:\WIN95 (where X is the letter that corresponds to your CD-ROM drive). You may also click on the Browse button and navigate out to the CD-ROM and find the WIN95 folder that way. 7. Click OK. Once Windows 95 has finished copying the appropriate files to your hard drive, click close. Finally, click OK on the Display Control Panel. Windows 95 will restart. Custom Monitor Support ---------------------- The Custom Monitor Utility allows you to select the best refresh rate for your monitor. You may want to have your monitor's manual or specifications with you while using this utility. To access the monitor utility: 1. Right click on the desktop, and select properties. 2. Click on the Diamond Refresh tab. 3. You will be presented with 3 choices. i. Use Windows 95 Default Monitor Settings - choose this setting to use the refresh rates that Windows 95 automatically assigns for the monitor selected. ii. Use Default Hardware Settings - choose this setting to use the Stealth 3D 2000's default refresh rates. iii. Use Customized Monitor Refresh Settings - choose this setting to select the actual refresh rate used for each resolution. The refresh rate for each color depth is selected individualy. See the following section for usage instructions. Using Customized Monitor Refresh Settings ----------------------------------------- When using the Diamond Refresh Utility for the first time, you will want to use the following steps: 1. Right click on the desktop. 2. Select the Diamond Refresh tab. The Refresh Utility will default to use Windows 95 default monitor settings. Click the Change button. 3. Click Use Customized Refresh Settings, do NOT change the refresh rate yet. Click OK. 4. A dialog will display stating that the Refresh Rate will change, click OK. Then accept by clicking Yes. 5. Now restart Windows 95. Upon restart, you will now be able change the refresh rate "On the Fly". NOTE: The supported resolutions and refresh rates will depend on the brand and model of your monitor as well as your current color depth and resolution. Features Added -------------- Added support for S3d-accelerated version of Descent II. Updated S3KERNEL.VXD to version 2.00 for latest S3d library support. Problems Addressed ------------------ Changed revision numbers to be Microsoft DirectX-compatible. Known Limitations ----------------- None.
