Edge 3D Multimedia Accelerator Driver Installation (Windows 95 Already Installed) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The following instructions assume that you have Windows 95 already installed on your computer, and have another graphics adapter currently installed as well. 1. When the system boots, you should see: Starting Windows 95.... At this point, hit F8 on the keyboard, which will bring up a menu. From the list, select: Command prompt only 2. The system should now be at a command prompt. Insert the Edge 3D Installation Disk into the floppy drive, and switch to that drive. Type the following command: INSTALL 3. INSTALL will perform the following tasks: A. Install NVINIT.SYS into the user's CONFIG.SYS file. This must be the first line in the file so that the Edge 3D multimedia accelerator gets a PCI interrupt allocated prior to any other PCI devices being initialized. B. INSTALL looks for the following and warns the user if any of these conditions are present: Triton PCI bridge chip set. This PCI bridge chip conflicts with the standard VGA.DRV installed with Windows 95. If this chip set is found then INSTALL updates VGA.DRV. SIS 496 bridge chip set. This chip set in combination with the on-board IDE functionality can cause some performance degradation. INSTALL simply informs the user. Intel Aries PCI bridge chip set. This chip set in combination with the on-board IDE functionality can cause some performance degradation. INSTALL informs the user. PCI to PCI bridge chip. If INSTALL finds a PCI to PCI bridge chip, it recommends that the Edge 3D card be installed in the first PCI slot for performance reasons. Compaq Presario or Prolinea computer's with a motherboard BIOS date of 03/01/95 or earlier. This BIOS does not allocate an interrupt to the Edge 3D card and the motherboard BIOS must be upgraded before running Windows 95 on these computers. AMI BIOS with a date of 12/15/93 and Phoenix BIOS 4.02. These BIOS's do not support multifunction PCI devices. If the Edge 3D is installed into the machine, a blank screen results. The motherboard BIOS must be upgraded before installing the Edge 3D into the system. Award BIOS dated January 1995 or earlier and Phoenix BIOS 1.0x. These BIOS's do not allocate an interrupt to the Edge 3D board and the system will hang at the Windows 95 splash screen. To solve this run the BIOS setup program using F1, F2, or DEL (whichever key is appropriate to your system) and manually allocate an interrupt to the Edge 3D card. C. Install the MS-DOS support files for the Edge 3D. The user will be prompted to enter the location the files should be stored in, with the default being C:\EDGE3D. The following support files will be copied: DOS\VGA.EXE This is a copy of the VGA.DRV file which fixes the Triton chip problem. DOS\NVINIT.SYS This is the MSDOS device driver which patches motherboard BIOSs that do not allocate interrupts to the Edge 3D card. DOS\RM.EXE This is the real mode portion of the Edge 3D product. This allows general MIDI MPU-401 to work. DOS\NVADVISE.EXE - This file can be used for further information about the motherboard BIOS and motherboard bridge chips. DOS\MIXER.EXE This DOS based program allows volume selection for the MPU-401 port. DOS\FRAMEBUF.SWP - This file is created by RM.EXE and it contains swap file information. MIDI\NVMIDISM.BNK - This file is the small bank for MIDI instruments. This data file enables MPU-401 or general MIDI to work. D. Update DOSSTART.BAT file in the Windows 95 directory. DOSSTART.BAT is executed when the user exits Windows 95 into a DOS exclusive mode. The user chooses this option by exiting Windows 95 using the "Restart computer in MSDOS mode" option from the shutdown dialog. The user will be prompted to enter the Windows 95 directory so that INSTALL may update DOSSTART.BAT. To complete the DOSSTART.BAT file the user will be prompted as to whether they want to enable the joystick and the MPU-401 interface in MSDOS. The joystick can be turned off or turned on. The MPU-401 can be turned off or turned on, and the I/O address can be set to one of three options by the user: 330h 300h 230h 4. Power off the system, remove the Edge 3D Installation Floppy, and install the Edge 3D board into the system as outlined by the Edge 3D User's Manual. 5. Restart the system and install the Windows 95 drivers for both video and multimedia: A. Windows 95 displays a dialog box indicating: "New Hardware Found - PCI VGA Compatible Display Adapter." Choose to install drivers from a disk provided by the hardware manufacturer. B. Type the appropriate path to the Edge 3D Windows 95 drivers (normally X:\DRIVERS\WIN95, where X is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). Drivers will be copied to the SYSTEM directory. C.
